More pain does not always equal less gain!
Results of a new study examining different doses of exercise and effects on
weight loss demonstrated some surprising findings. This study compared
exercises at the following doses: 4kcal/kg (~3.5miles/wk), 8kcal/kg (~7miles/wk)
and 12kcal/kg (~10miles/wk). Those who lost the most weight were those who
expended 8kcal/kg a week. It is hypothesized that when you are exercising at a
high intensity, you tend to overcompensate with your dietary intake.

Getting your beauty sleep extends to improving your waistline!
Today, more than 30% of adult men and women between the ages of 30 and
64 years report sleeping less than 6 h/night. This decrease in average sleep duration has occurred over the same time period as the increase in the prevalence of obesity/weight gain and diabetes. Laboratory studies show that sleep loss is associated with impairments in glucose metabolism and with alterations in hormones that control appetite. Leptin, a hormone that stimulates energy expenditure and decreases appetite falls with sleep deprivation. Ghrelin, a hormone that decreased energy expenditure and increases appetite rises with sleep deprivation. While further studies are necessary to determine if lack of sleep truly causes obesity/weight gain or is simply correlated with it, it never hurts to get those recommended 8 hours of sleep a night.

Spice up your weight loss with sweet chili peppers!
Everyone would like to add some "natural" ingredient to food or take a "natural" supplement to lose weight. In reality, there is just not much in nature that has been demonstrated to cause weight loss when examined in a well designed medical study. Recently there has been one exception to this rule, capsinoids in chili peppers.
Capsaicin, the compound that gives chili peppers there "heat", have been demonstrated in animal and human studies increase resting energy expenditure as well as fatty acid oxidation. Capsiate, derived from the CH-19 strain of sweet chili peppers, is similar to capsaicin but without the pungency of capsaicin. Recently, a Japanese company has brought capsiate to the market in the form of an oil. In studies sponsored by this company, a 4-week intake of capsiate pills demonstrated a trend for an increase in fatty acid oxidation and resting energy expenditure.
One important footnote to mention for those of you planning to load up on sweet chili peppers. It takes approximately one ton of peppers to make 100 grams of capsiate!
